What's a male mechanical engineer doing writing in the woman-dominated Romance genre? Telling stories, just like other fiction writers. But in my case, I develop characters and their relationships from a male perspective.
Overall, I believe men have gotten a bum rap for their participation in relationships. Sure, there are male jerks, and maybe the one my statement caused to pop into your mind is a 24 karat example. But looked at it from the male perspective, there is a good percentage of the female population that are thoughtless, cruel, conniving, and self-centered, too. Not all men qualify, nor all women. No matter who you are, the secret is to avoid those who do, and instead seek out those worthy of your affection.
As a fresh-out-of-college mechanical engineer, I designed the worlds largest gantry crane for the Third Powerhouse at Grand Coulee Dam. (It's in the 1990 Guinness Book of World Records). Also received two patents for harvesting machinery, the outgrowth of growing up a farm boy.
Technical writing is an unavoidable part of being an engineer; that is how and why I began writing. As a result, I have published several articles in technical magazines as well as numerous adventure and hobby articles stemming from a deep interest in steam engines, trucks, aviation, firearms, and other antique machinery. My extensive overseas travels and a 2-year stint working in the oil fields of eastern Saudi Arabia provide potential plots for several up-coming novels. While stationed in the Arabian desert with far too much time on my hands, I began writing an experimental novel, Princesses of Fox Hill, from which I discovered the gratification of writing fiction.
A graduate of Yakima Junior College and then Washington State University, with my fresh BSME degree, in 1970 I emigrated from my childhood home in Washington's Yakima Valley to Spokane. There I spent a total of twenty years as an aluminum plant engineer before retiring, then graduating again, this time from Spokane Community College's Diesel/Heavy Equipment Program—just for fun! (You may think I’m nuts, but men just think differently than women).
